Storytime: New & Notable Board Books (31)

This week's Storytime features monster trucks, interactive questions, lift-the-flaps, a sleepy book, and an old favorite - all in board book format!

I'm a Monster Truck

It’s not just a truck. . . . It’s a MONSTER TRUCK! In this high-octane board book, truck fans everywhere can start their engines and ride along with Mudenstein and his mammoth machine friends for all their crashing, smashing fun!
Car- and truck-obsessed little ones will ask for I'm a Monster Truck over and over again. Bob Staake's illustrations are fantastic - as per usual - and the story ends with a sleepy monster truck, which makes this a great read for before bedtime or a nap. I stumble over the name "Carcharodontosaurus" every time, so I recommend practicing before reading aloud the first time.

Love You, Hug You, Read to You!
Written by Tish Rabe; Illustrated by Frank Endersby
Ages 0-3, Available Now

“There are three things I’ll always do . . . love you, hug you, read to you!” The simple promise of togetherness offered in this bilingual (Spanish and English) board book is enhanced by interactive prompts throughout, encouraging parents to engage with their child while reading. Studies show that asking questions, like the ones in this book, helps children learn to read faster than if they just listen to a story. Love and literacy are gifts we can give to our children every day!
The story within this board book is sweet and simple, but it's the interactive comprehension questions that really make this one stand out. Each page has questions to engage little listeners, like "Where is Baby Polar Bear sitting?" and "Where are the two blue butterflies." Highly recommended!

Noah's Ark
Retold by Michelle Knudsen; Illustrated by Christopher Santoro
Ages 0-3, Available 1.12.2016

The tale of Noah’s ark, one of the most enduring stories of all time, is now available as a board book full of 30 fun flaps. Children will love flipping the pages, lifting the flaps, and finding their very favorite animals. From zebras and rabbits to elephants and dogs, this version of the treasured tale has something for everyone and is a perfect addition to any family’s library.
This Noah's Ark board book features the traditional story, but includes over 30 flaps to lift! The flaps are relatively sturdy and most were easy to lift the first time around. I liked that some were easy to locate and others required a bit of exploring.

Shhh! this Book is Sleeping
Written by Cedric Ramadier; Illustrated by Vincent Bourgeau
Ages 0-3, Available Now

Hold this book gently because it’s very sleepy! A mouse inside the pages invites you to read the book a bedtime story, tuck it in with a cozy blanket, and give it a hug and a kiss. Oh, and don’t forget to ask whether it brushed its teeth and went pee-pee! Then turn off the light. There. Shhh! This book is sleeping! Fans of Press Here and The Monster at the End of This Book will enjoy coaxing the very book they’re holding to go to sleep.
This unique board book asks readers to gently lull it to sleep. In quiet voices, readers are asked to make sure the book has brushed it's teeth, that it's warm enough, to give it hug, and a kiss, then slowly turn out the lights. This one's definitely different, but I like the interactive quality!

Introducing a Spanish/English bilingual board book edition of Leo Lionni's beloved classic!

Elephants are gray. Pigs are pink. All animals have a color of their own—except for chameleons. They change color wherever they go! This colorful tale of true friends is now available as a dual-language board book, bringing Leo Lionni's beloved story to life in both Spanish and English for the youngest child.

In my opinion, you can never go wrong with Leo Lionni. In this updated board book version of A Color of His Own, English and Spanish text are side by side. This fantastic story about friendship makes a great storytime read or a perfect practice text for those just learning to read in Spanish!
